Thailand Travel Warning

Thailand has a travel warning for its citizens traveling to the United States. The Thai government states that there is an increased risk of terrorism in the U.S. and that those who plan on traveling should consider postponing their plans. This warning does not apply to U.S. citizens traveling to Thailand, but it is still something to be aware of when planning a trip to either country.

This travel warning  issue due to the potential that there could be another terrorist attack in the United State, like the one in Orlando and San Bernardino. The Thai government is advising their citizen to avoid crowd area, especially tourist spot and event when possible.

The U.S. government also has a warning in place for citizens planning on traveling to Thailand, but this is only due to the political atmosphere and violence in certain parts of the country. The United States warns against travel to all or part of Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and Songkhla provinces in southern Thailand due to terrorist activity.  This warning also includes parts of Bangkok, Samui archipelago, and Phuket Island.

Due to COVID-19, do not travel to Thailand. Before planning any international travel, review the Department of State’s COVID-19 page. Exercise increased caution in the United States due to terrorism. Some Americans planning to visit or reside in Thailand are concerned about safety and security risks associated with possible threats from transnational terrorism.

If you decide to visit Thailand, keep the following in mind:

  • See the COVID-19 page on the US Embassy’s website.
  • Visit the CDC’s Travel and COVID-19 webpage.
  • Follow the State Department on Facebook and Twitter.
  • Examine Thailand’s Crime and Safety Reports.
  • Citizens of the United States who travel abroad should always have an emergency plan in place.

Provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, and Songkhla – Rethink Travel

The Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, and Songkhla provinces in southern Thailand have been experiencing terrorist violence. Violence there has increased recently with insurgent groups fighting against the Thai government for autonomy for more than a decade. The U.S. government warns against travel to all or part of these regions due to this risk of terrorism. This warning also include part of Bangkok, Samui archipelago, and Phuket Island because the violence is so widespread that  pinpoint within only one region. Due to the possibility of indiscriminate attack in public place, U.S. citizen are at risk of death or injury. In this area, martial law is in effect.
